Whole Wheat Tortillas! [Recipe]

The other day we went to the store to buy some tortillas. I was so bummed to see how expensive they were! We already make our flour tortillas at home, so my husband came up with the idea to try whole wheat. Great idea! They tasted amazing- and were SO cheap to make at home. We have a bin in our refrigerator of about ten of them ready to go. They are perfect with eggs, or for a peanut butter and jelly tortilla sandwich! Your family will love these- and you will be finished with them in no time.

Whole Wheat Tortillas
(Recipe adapted from New Best Recipe- Cooks Illustrated)

  • 2 cups whole wheat four
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup warm water
Sift flour, salt and baking powder into a large mixing bowl. Cut vegetable oil into the flour mixture, mixing well to combine. Add water, working until a sticky ball forms. Wrap in plastic, and let rest for about 30 minutes. Divide the dough into about 8-10 balls, and lay a damp cloth over the top. Lightly dust counter top with flour and roll out dough into a large, even, flat round shape. Heat a skillet on high for approximately 3-5 minutes. Cook the tortilla on both sides until you see it brown slightly and wrinkle slightly. Set on a plate and cover with a towel, keeping tortillas warm.
